Residential Life students celebrating Chinese New Year.

On Saturday, January 25, 2020, students celebrated the Chinese New Year.  It is celebrated every year on the first day of the Chinese calendar and it is the longest holiday in China. During the celebration, people gather together with their family and have a huge, traditional meal.

As a matter of fact, people started celebrating Chinese New Year a long time ago, with an interesting story behind the traditions. The myth goes that there was a monster named Nian and every time when it was time for a new year, the monster came out and hunted children as food. Later people found out Nian was afraid of red, so on Chinese New Year, people wore red clothes and light firecrackers, staying up until midnight to protect themselves.

On Friday, January 24, 2020, everyone in the dorm celebrated through  enjoying Chinese-style steam-boiled chicken and receiving a red envelope with presents or money. With music and warm gathering, Village put on an outstanding Chinese New Year celebration that is often hard to imagine in a place like Houston!
