In today’s world, computer science is a rapidly growing industry. Because of this, The Village School, which strives to prepare students for their future, recently added a computer science diploma. This diploma gives aspiring computer science students the opportunity to explore the field.
The Computer Science Diploma is a newly added program at The Village School that offers classes such as Robotics 1 and 2, Advanced Programming, Introduction to Computer Science, and newer topics such as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. The diploma track teaches students problem-solving skills, algorithmic thinking, logical thinking, and more.
“I enjoy teaching the students,” Mansoor Ansari, head of the Computer Science Department said. “I am able to make a difference in their lives.”
This diploma leaves students with a strong foundation in computer science, preparing them for their future careers.
The program has already introduced a few new courses, Robotics 2, AP Computer Science, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering Practices. These courses build on the existing curriculum and help students further develop their technology and computer science skills.
While pursuing the diploma, students complete numerous projects, including Software Engineering Practices. Unlike the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, there is no large additional project required; however, students will earn a Java certification to receive the Computer Science Diploma.
The diploma also teaches skills beyond computer science. “Many people would say the ability to learn and think critically, but I also believe it teaches students how to be patient with trial and error,” IB Computer Science senior Maddox Williams said.
This program was introduced in response to the rapid growth of the computer science industry. At The Village School, staff aim to prepare students for the future, which motivated this addition. “Students will gain problem-solving skills, including algorithmic thinking, logical reasoning, decomposition, and more,” Ansari said. Taking this diploma allows students to explore computer science more deeply than individual courses.
With this new program, students interested in computer science can now prepare for their future in greater depth and with more guidance.
