The Magical Worlds of Deltarune

September 15, 2015 was the release date of Toby Fox’s wildly successful and highly praised RPG-game Undertale, which was a unique, interesting and emotional journey through a fantastical and diverse world of monsters and humans. Since launch, the game amassed an enormous and energetic fanbase, which waited patiently for Fox’s next release. On October 31, 2018, fans were finally greeted with something new, and possibly the start of something even greater – Deltarune Chapter 1. The game takes place in an alternate universe to Undertale, with everything that made Undertale so great and more. Of course, with the exception of an excellent storyline – this was, after all, only the first chapter of a 7 chapter long series. So, more alive than it had been for a long while, the fandom once again waited for the next release, filling the time with fan-made content, discussions, and predictions for what was to come of this new, mysterious series. They had another 3 years to wait.

Deltarune: Chapter 2 came out on September 17, 2021, sharing all of the great qualities of the previous installment. It takes place exactly a day after Chapter 1, which, in combination with the series as a whole being 7 parts, suggests that the game as a whole will be about the main characters’ experiences over one week. Throughout this week, so far, our character’s have been sucked out of their quaint neighborhood into a diverse and massive world of danger, magic, and unfamiliar faces.

As with Undertale, the worlds of Deltarune – the characters, environments, and mechanics – all buzz with life. This is the biggest strength of Toby Fox’s games – every last person and place is fun to interact with and explore, making for a uniquely entertaining experience. Much of it boils down to the excellent writing style of Fox, which is undeniably unique in ways that are difficult to describe – it’s funny, witty, moving, intelligent and more. This, in combination with excellent animations and sprites lead by Temmie Chang turns Deltarune into a lovable and memorable experience.

In all, the appeal of Deltarune comes in the form of the world that it takes place in.

I give it a 10/10 for how fun it turns out to be.
