Asians Are Not a Virus

As recent newspapers have constantly been mentioning,  Coronavirus was found in 2019 in China and is now spreading around the globe. As a deadly disease, it originated from bats and has caused more than 3,000 deaths and has infected over 100,000. With fear and anger, people that are from Europe and America are starting to call Asian people “viruses”, saying that it is our fault for spreading the virus. Giving racist speeches clearly will not help and it is the most hurtful way to solve the problem.

Jonathan Mok, who is a Singaporean student, was beaten in a racist assault in Oxford, London on February 24, 2020. The assailant, who was with a group of four people said, “I don’t want your coronavirus in my country!”

Nobody ever called African people “HIV virus” even though it originated from Africa. Nobody ever called British people “prions” because it is stupidity to relate an animal disease to innocent people. Asian people should be treated the same. They should not be called “coronavirus”, nor “virus carriers”. It is extremely inappropriate and rude to do so since some of their family members might be in a difficult situation during this pandemic. The Village School Residential Life feels very strongly about this, with a massive Asian crowd in the dorms. Stop doing these acts and everyone can make it through.
