The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization in the greater Houston area.
Places that have food banks or are served by them are labelled as food insecure. This means they lack consistent access to enough food and nutrients. Luckily food banks serve a purpose of giving the community nutritious food. The Houston Food bank has 1600 community partners and a program aimed to help families achieve long-term stability.
On Wednesday Oct. 1, 2025, Sophomore and Juniors from The Village School sat for the Pre-SAT. The Freshman class went to the Houston Food Bank and worked for four hours, helping out the Houston community by supplying food for people in need. Their primary job was cleaning the cans and sorting them into categories. There were seven different types of crates which were medicine, pet items, non food items, hygiene of all types, bottle items, cans, and snacks. Once the cans were cleaned they were put into specific boxes that were on moving conveyor belts and then put into bigger boxes just for that specific item.
“It felt really good to help out, I went to sleep feeling like I made a difference,” freshman Humza Mohamed said. This shows that making a positive impact can help students feel happier.
“It is nice being able to help families and our community,” freshman Arsal Azim said.
