Parth Gupta (11), Mr. Petrolito, Yash Tiwari (11), Moheb Mirza (11), Rohan Bendapudi (11), Jalen Bowers (11), Akshat Kumar (11), Jay Natarajan (11), and Sophia Manalo (11) at the end of their volunteering experience for Afghan refugees.

On Sunday, February 6, 2022, a service-based and student-led organization called The Initiative held a community service event at the Afghan Refugee Center. The club, which is run by juniors Parth Gupta, Jay Natarajan, Rohan Bendapudi, Abhinav Sairam and Alexander Ilacqua, is devoted to helping various Non-profit organizations throughout the Houston area. At the event, the student volunteers packed and sorted clothes that were being donated for Afghan Refugees. The Refugee Center had a very simple process: people donated lightly used clothing to the center, and the volunteers came to the center to sort the clothes and prepare them for pickup.

“It was a really rewarding experience,” said junior Moheb Mirza. “Knowing that you’re making a difference in the lives of others is a really good feeling!”

The Initiative has been running events like this throughout the school year. Their next event will be held at the Temenos Community Development Center, which is a non-profit supporting the homeless.
