The Vikings Elite Spirit Team are finally done with all their seasonal competitions! They were supposed to have one last event, their annual spring show. In this event, dancers typically perform all the choreography from throughout the year to showcase their progress. It was supposed to take place in the field outside the high school building on Friday, April 23, 2021, but was postponed. The event was finally cancelled due to a chance of rain.

“I was so upset when I heard about the news,” said senior Salome Bovin, a member of the Elite Spirit team. “This being my last year at Village, it would have been the last time I ever performed with my team, and it would be such a beautiful memory.”

This was a huge event for the team for many reasons. First, usually the team would be able to perform at various athletic teams games, but the girls were only able to do that a few times this year. Performing at those games was uparticularly exhilarating and enjoyable because they were for the purpose of entertainment and experience, free from the pressures of scores and competition. The spring show was supposed to be such an event that the entire high school would even be able to witness live. Despite this, a few positive outcomes came out of this cancellation.

“Everything has a positive aspect,” said freshmen Atiana Henderson, another member of the Elite Spirit team.  “Even though I’m sad it got cancelled, there was a lot going on that week, and many of us were very stressed and tired.”

The Elite Spirit team was quarantined for two weeks and missed practice for nearly 14 days. Hence, all the missed rehearsal was crammed into a single week to be ready for the show. Team members had to stay for hours after school, practicing and recording (in case there would be a virtual show). Members also had minimal time to work on their group dances, where they split into two groups and choreograph their own dances.

“It was a great opportunity to be able to choreograph our own dances, and express yourself in them,” said sophomore Iona Macaulay, a leader on the Elite Spirit team. “However, we were in a hurry to finish it and didn’t have much time to perfect it, so we weren’t ready to perform it.”

Hence, canceling the Viking Spirit Elite team spring show had its advantages and drawbacks. The team lost their chance to cherish their last memory of performing together, but it took away loads of last-minute stress burdening the dancers that week.
