International Cuisines in Houston

It’s very interesting that every night or weekend, you can choose a different restaurant according to the type of cuisine that you want to try. In fact, Houston is famous for its international food and the diversity of its cuisines from all over the world.

For the first example of international cuisine, we can name the Mexican kitchen that has an important role and place here in Houston.

“In the Mexican cuisine we can find a lot of typical dishes since every state has its own,” says sophomore Ximena Trejo, “but the ones that are mostly known are Pozole, Mole, Tamales, Tacos of different varieties, Quesadillas, Chilaquiles, Enchiladas of different types, and many others. My favorite dishes are Mole, a traditional sauce and marinade, Quesadillas, a dish consisting of a tortilla that is filled primarily with cheese, and sometimes meats, spices, and other fillings, and Tacos al pastor, sliced pieces of marinated pork that make for the best taco. Serve them up with some sliced onion, pineapple, and cilantro. Unfortunately, most restaurants in Houston are not typical Mexican food, but rather tex-mex. But for the people who want to try some, I recommend the restaurant “Los Tioss”.

Another type of international cuisine not very well known but can be found in Houston is the Malaysian kitchen. “The typical dishes of this cuisine usually include rice, like ‘nasi lemak’ Malaysian coconut milk rice, served with sambal, fried crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts, and cucumber,” said sophomore Jasmine Zulaik,” it is really good and it’s filled with so much flavor. My favorite Malaysian food is lontong, which is a dish made of compressed rice cake in the form of a cylinder wrapped inside a banana leaf. It’s so good, I loved eating it growing up. The restaurants here in Houston are not that good, but the closest is “papparich”. If you go there, you have to try the Hainan chicken rice with teh tarik.

We can also talk about the Italian cuisine that is becoming more and more known in Houston. “In Italy, there are a lot of typical dishes,” junior Enrico Monte says, ”the most famous is pizza which is known all over the world, then we have all types of pasta, like carbonara, bolognese, and many others. In addition, the particular thing in Italy is that in each region there is a different type of cuisine with its own typical dishes, many flavors, and many traditions to know. My favorite dish is Parmigiana. It is a dish based on fried eggplant au gratin in the oven with tomato sauce, basil, garlic, and cheese. There are many Italian restaurants but not all of them have real Italian dishes. I recommend ‘Impero Italiano’ if you want to try a real Neapolitan pizza and other typical Italian dishes.”

As you can see you can find a lot of cuisines, from the best known to the least known, and there are many others around the town. All you have to do is explore to enjoy!
