On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, The Village School had its annual Vikings vs. Cancer varsity girls basketball game. The team won the game with a 34-point lead, the final score being 71-37. For the sixth year now, this event was hosted to raise money and awareness for cancer.

Since many at The Village School have suffered losses due to their own family members going through cancer, Vikings who played in the event sold pink hearts prior to the game for two dollars each to write the name of someone affected by cancer and honor them. Every year, these proceeds are donated to charities, specifically the Texas Children’s Hospital’s Cancer and Hematology Centers for this year’s occasion.

“The Vikings vs. Cancer game is near and dear to my heart,” Doug Brotherton, the girl’s varsity basketball coach, said. “I feel very passionately that we should use our platform that is created through athletics to positively impact others, and this is a great way for us to raise awareness and funds for cancer research so we can defeat this terrible disease.”
