The iPhone Xs vs. iPhone XR: Is Apple Competing with Itself?

This October, Apple released two new iPhones: the iPhone Xs and the iPhone XR.  Much like last year’s release of the iPhone X, these two will certainly try and put a dent in your wallet should you invest. Each of the new devices come with unique features.

The iPhone Xs’ super retina display comes in two sizes, the basic size (starting at $999) and  the “Max” (starting at $1099). This is symbolic of Apple’s trend of listing the device with the larger screen under the Plus category. Apple claims this is not only their best screen but also their largest with a 6.5” display. The screens finally take advantage of OLED, Organic Light Emitting Diode, technology. This results in true black: a screen which can almost recreate the absence of light. This is different from the past in that the pixels would still emit a small amount of light even if the screen was black. The new technology guarantees that no light radiates from the screen.

On the other hand, the iPhone XR brings in a  well-needed aspect to the iPhone lineup since 2013 when the iPhone 5C released: a change in color. The available colors for the new device include white, black, blue yellow, coral, and the (PRODUCT)RED color for HIV/AIDs relief. These colors bring a new excitement for the iPhone again. In addition to the wide choices of available colors, Apple’s website boasts of the new retina LCD, Liquid Crystal Display, technology that will come with the new XR. Although it  sounds futuristic, this technology is only marginally different to the modern LCD that are present in the older versions of the iPhone.

Lew from Unbox Therapy states that the iPhone XR actually comes with a PPI (pixel per inch) ratio, which indicates how ‘clear’ the image is, that is the same as the iPhone 4 (which came out in mid-2010).

However, despite how the screen seems on paper, it’s actually not as bad as some of us were lead to believe. The new retina LCD technology allows for a crisp clear image completely up to Apple’s standards, and the pixels were not visible even with the low PPI. This year’s iPhone lineup looks exciting and shows consumers that progress is definitely being strived for.
