In our digital age, we all tend to prefer technology—online games, online documents, online shopping… It cannot be denied that online services are extremely beneficial and efficient; however, the art of making things by hand holds deep cultural, emotional, and economic significance. At The Village School, students also participate in hand-making products, running small businesses to sell them, or creating a volunteering activity to make items at local fairs.
“Handmade crafts carry the soul of a culture, and without it, we are going to lose the cultural knowledge and lack of connection with heritages,” said Shannon Carswell, an anthropology teacher at The Village School. “Continuously, it will lead to loss of cultural identity and the nations’ own uniqueness.”
Directly linked through heritage and long-standing tradition, handicraft products carried the soul of a nation and were made with love and honor by the craftsmen. It was carried on through generations and contains a deep historical meaning. Each product made by hand, whether it’s a hand-knitted sweater, a ceramic mug, or a handmade bracelet, has its own story and uniqueness. That’s how paintings, sculptures, literacy, or art-related merchandise have always been respected; it’s not because of the appearance outside but rather because of the profound meaning inside.
Crafting is designed for all ages, races, genders, and ethnicities, and research has shown that crafting can be a way to reduce stress and could act as a therapy, helping us stay mindful and rest from the bustle of life. Based on the Spectrum Health & Human Service, Crafting builds a mindful workspace, which is very similar to that of meditation. The Village School Vikings also can use these methods to relax after stressful hours of study while having their own unique products. It allows one to “forget the stressors of day-to-day life” and concentrate on “the here and now,” keeping your mind out of the chaotic and fast-paced nature of life.
Handmade crafts are a way of communication and greetings from the locals to tourists. During a local fair or market, handicrafts convey the message and values of culture, which is the heart and the key to cultural preservation. It’s a charming and unique way to express your identity and hobby as well as reflect the characters of the artisans. Through handmade products, local people can express and share their culture with international tourists, expanding knowledge and fostering a positive society.
While technology continues to shape our world, the importance of handcraft remains undeniable. Handmade goods preserve traditions, benefit mental health, and also convey unique messages in each of the artworks. Supporting handicrafts can also benefit small businesses and independent artists and spread your culture around the world.
