For the first time in four years residential life students at The Village School awoke to soft powdery snow falling from the sky! On January 21, 2025, Houston, Texas turned into a winter wonderland with up to seven inches of snow coating the ground. What makes the snow so special for so many is that this is the first time since 2021 that Houston has had significant snowfall. The streets looked like those belonging to a Hallmark holiday movie.
This extraordinary weather did not go unappreciated. Many day students and dorm students took to the outdoors making snowmen and snow angels. Some dorm students even woke up as early as two in the morning to play in the powdery snow. For some it was their very first time in the snow making their snow day even more special. “This was my first time in the snow because I grew up in the Middle East so this had never happened to me before.” Said junior Annika Jain. “Because this was my first experience in snow I didn’t know what to expect but it was amazing, having snowball fights, making snow angels, dancing around while the snow falls over us, it felt like a dream. It was also really cool to see other parts of Houston in snow online where everything was frozen and covered in thick snow, it looked really beautiful.” Said Jain. Playing in the snow wasn’t the only way students enjoyed their day off. Some students even went skiing and sledding, finding hills or bumps to ride down.
And students weren’t the only ones who had fun. “Several dorm parents came out and proctored to make sure we didn’t injure ourselves, but they did get the occasional snowball thrown at them.” Said Jain. That’s not all though, other members of staff had their own fun snow stories to tell. “I snowboarded in Katy in a retention pond on a small hill,” Said Jeana Rhodes, the Events Manager for The Village School. “I haven’t laughed this much in so long. I felt like a kid again. It was a blast.”Said Rhodes.
Along with all these fun activities there was a large amount of snowmen made. Frosty would certainly be happy. Many students, teachers and parents took to Instagram and other social media platforms posting pictures of their snow folk. For many this was their very first time making a snowman. “I didn’t know it was so hard to make a snowman,” Said Jain, “we tried a lot but settled for a baby one after all previous attempts failed.” In addition to snowmen, many wrote in the snow celebrating and welcoming the new year. The words “Hello 2025” were written on the lawns, backyards and patios of many Houston residents.
When students returned to school on January 23, 2025 many were pleasantly surprised to see some snow still coating the ground of the campus. Some even mentioned how seeing snow on campus was weird since it is such a rare occurrence. During lunch breaks some students even played in the snow, enjoying it one last time before it finally melted.
Now temperatures have once again begun to rise, leaving many to treasure this unique snowy occurrence. Overall, the Houston snow was such a special experience for many students. Memories were made, laughs were shared and snowmen were born.
