“Sonic the Hedgehog” is an absolute blast. A swash-buckling adventure following the journey of Sonic and his friend, local sheriff, Tom Wachowski. The movie most certainly faced an uncertain path and had a rocky journey ever since the trailer was released in November 2019. It faced a lot of backlash for its controversial creation of Sonic and was dismissed by many critics and fans. The theatrical release was delayed until further notice and the director, Jeff Fowler, went back to the drawing board. 

However, the extra work put in by the studio greatly paid off as the film was raved about upon its release. The film raced off to a hot start pulling in over a healthy 20 million and didn’t look back. Over its opening weekend, it made a gross of 58 million dollars and over 2 weeks of being released, “Sonic” has raced to a total of 265 million. The film is projected to continue its current pace despite coronavirus fears. 

The plot is very simplistic, easy, and followable. Sonic the Hedgehog is on the run (the world’s speediest-get the pun?!) from some high power villains. He ends up on Earth through a portal and his famous gold rings and escapes threats all around. Sonic goes to Green Hills and makes it his home, even making his first friend, the local sheriff Tom Wachowski. However, Sonic does not release he is being followed by Dr. Robotnik who is sent by the U.S. government to infiltrate and track him down. The movie is this telling of Will Sonic’s adventure as he fights his epic battle for survival. 

The way the filmmakers paid homage to the iconic characters of the video game and the delightful variety of cheesy jokes and humor played a great role in attracting moviegoers. Fans ranging from all ages come in droves as strong word of mouth and critical reception fueled the movie’s success. It currently holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and could even go up from here. 

Overall, I would give this movie an 8/10 as this fun high flying ride is for anyone and enjoyable for all audiences!
